Tony Toscano reviews “The Tooth Fairy”

Feb 3rd, 2010 | by Rich Bonaduce

In this one-joke comedy Duane Johnson stars as Derek, a self-centered professional hockey player who has the reputation of knocking his opponent’s teeth out when he collides with them on the ice.

Because of this trademark move, his nickname on the ice is Tooth Fairy.

He’s dating a woman (played by Ashley Judd) with 2 children, one a distraught teenage boy named Randy suffering from a acute case of no confidence. And a little girl named Tess, who suffers from being just too cute.

When Tess loses a tooth and puts it under her pillow, he tells her he is the only real Tooth Fairy. This ticks off the queen of the fairies (Julie Andrews) and she decrees he must spend a week as a real tooth fairy.

I can hear the pitch meeting now… “Let’s get “The Rock” in a fairy outfit and…”

“Tooth Fairy” breaks no new ground as Derek takes on the double life of hockey player and tooth fairy. All the while he must learn he is not the center of the universe, teach Randy about self-confidence and teach Tess there are indeed fairies in the world.

I will admit there are 1 or 2 good laughs in the film, but overall this is just another strained and overly formulaic comedy, which anyone over the age of 8 will probably find sophomoric.

It gets a C- and is rated PG.
