Tony Toscano reviews “Alice in Wonderland”
Needless to say, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is a visual feast for the eyes. The director has done a great job in taking the original illustrations for both books and re-imagined them for the big 3D screen.
That being said, I left the screening a bit wanting. Thinking there should have been so much more than a visual walk-through of Wonderland. The characters in the film needed to interact with each other more and (more importantly) interact with the audience more, after all the film is in 3D.
The film does have its fun side with enjoyable performances by Helena Bonham-Carter as the Red Queen, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Matt Lucas as Tweedledee & Tweedledum. All seem to perfectly fit the roles as citizens of Wonderland (or in Tim Burton’s explanation “Underland”).
Not fitting in so easily is Johnny Depp’s “Mad Hatter,” who, it seems, is a survivor of war atrocities, which has led him to insanity. Burton, in this case, added a back-story, which really wasn’t needed.
Overall “Alice in Wonderland” suffers from its own excesses, which flattens the feel of this 3D film.
It gets a C+ and is rated PG-13.
